Appreciating Asian Pacific American Heritage

The month of April marked the celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. To commemorate the event, the Office of Academic Support and Intercultural Services (OASIS) co-sponsored art and cultural speakers, a talent show and a samurai dinner event.

Week Without Violence Builds Awareness

Since Oct. 8, the Women’s Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has been celebrating the UNL Week Without Violence. The center joined efforts with both on- and off-campus organizations to spread awareness of different forms of violence and make a stand against abuse.

Late Night Lounge Offers Study Space and Evening Activities

From Dec. 5 to Dec. 8, students flocked to the OASIS Lounge and Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center for Late Night Lounge, traditionally held the week prior to finals. Hosted by the Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services (OASIS) and the OASIS Student Advisory Board, Late Night Lounge provided students with a place to de-stress or a destination to study for upcoming finals. Rooms on the second floor were reserved for students who needed to quiet space to study away.

Celebrating the dimensions of love at A Love Affair Gala

On Feb. 17, students, staff and faculty gathered in the Ross Van Brunt Visitor’s Center for Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services' A Love Affair Gala. The gala, free for students, was a celebration of Black History Month and the various dimensions of love.

Rev. Karla Cooper opened the gala with a message. The reverend emphasized that love is instinctive, and people must love themselves before they can love others.

Student achievements applauded at Student Impact Awards

On Thursday, April 6, Student Involvement honored outstanding contributions and efforts by Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs), RSO leaders and advisors at the Student Impact Awards.

Never Forget to Smile, Nebraska

My name is Mohammed Hussain Al Abdullah and I was born in Saudi Arabia where I lived for the first ten years of my life. At the age of ten, due to my career in cycling, I moved with my Road Cycling Club to the Czech Republic where I lived for nearly four years without my family. From there, I lived for a year in Manchester City, in the United Kingdom, before leaving for Dubai. While living in Dubai, I learned about myself, discovered my passions, and figured out what I wanted to do in my life.

Students share their hopes for the future at the Night of Listening

On Tuesday, Feb. 21, students shared their visions for the future with local representatives at Night of Listening, an event sponsored by the Center for Civic Engagement, ASUN, the Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services and the College of Arts and Sciences. City Councilpersons Leirion Gaylor-Baird, Carl Eskridge and Jane Raybould were in attendance along with State Sens. John Lowe, Adam Morfeld and Anna Wishart. Sen. Ben Sasse’s outreach coordinator Ryan Broker spoke on his behalf.

UNL Community Dishes on Building Community & Creating Action

Approximately 50 students, staff and faculty gathered Friday, July 15 at noon to discuss the epidemic of recent tragedies across the country. Kevin Reese, program coordinator in the Office for Academic Success and Intercultural Services, began the event by promoting open conversation without arguments, respectful conversation and engaging with one another. An officer with the Lincoln Police Department was also present.

Pi Alpha Chi Joins Nebraska Panhellenic Association as Associate Member

Pi Alpha Chi, a local sorority founded on Catholic values, was accepted into the Panhellenic Association at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as an associate member in September.

Nebraska Define American RSO Wins National Award

The Define American Chapter at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln received the College Chapter of the Year award from the national organization in December.

Nebraska continues to add to nation-leading Wasson Award winners

Four University of Nebraska-Lincoln students received the William N. Wasson Student Leadership and Academic Award presented by NIRSA, the national association for campus recreation leadership, during the association’s annual conference held February 21–24, 2017 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. Nebraska leads the nation with 78 recipients since the award’s inception in 1993 and is the only higher-ed institution in the country to have at least one Wasson Award winner every year the award has been given.

Student Spotlight: "What If I Don't Like Seafood?"

“The world is your oyster, now go find your pearl.” I would hear this cliché phrase from my English teacher at least once a week and to be frank, I didn’t understand the big deal that everyone was making. I was expecting college to be four years of my life in which I’ll meet people from all over the world and experience lots of new things, but I figured it would just be like a bigger version of high school with harder courses and added responsibilities. Boy was I wrong, because the second I stepped onto UNL, the world did become my oyster.

Book Club Invites Discussion on Japanese Literature and Culture

When senior global studies major Milla Heikkinen talks about the Kawasaki Reading Room Book Club, the enthusiasm and passion in her voice proves that the club is more special than your average reading group.

The Kawasaki Reading Room Book Club provides a place for students and members of the community to be in fellowship with people who share an interest Japanese culture.

MLK Week encourages reflection and rallying

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln recently celebrated Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and reflected upon the role of his dream in America today. Multiple events in January called upon the university community to perpetuate social justice through education and meaningful conversations.

Greek leadership symposia encourage education and reflection

On Friday, Feb. 24, the second Greek leadership symposium of the semester took place with more than 142 students present. At the symposium Nolan Conradt, the education and training officer for the University Police Department, presented on emergency plans and situational preparedness.

“It is good to be mindful of what actions to take in the case of emergencies or crises and to be more aware of our surroundings,” said Shayne Arriola, a member of Pi Kappa Alpha and president of the Interfraternity Council.

Women's Week Informs, Empowers and Inspires Action

More than 400 students, staff, faculty and community members participated in Women’s Week events. Hosted March 5 -18, 2016, the event included movie screenings, panel discussions, art exhibits, keynote lectures, athletic events and technology centered event – all centered around the mission of empowering women.

$1.9 Million in Grants and Sponsorships Fund Student Affairs Programs

Six departments and more than 16 programs in the Division of Student Affairs benefitted from $1,914,646 in grant and sponsorship funds during the 2016 calendar year.

"We are excited to report how successful some of our departments have been in their efforts to gain financial assistance. Most of these funds go directly to help our students,” said Vice Chancellor Juan N. Franco.
