Franco Friday provides town hall for staff members

On Friday, February 17, more than 50 staff members from various departments in the Division of Student Affairs gathered in the Nebraska Union third floor hallway for Franco Friday. This town hall style event began last spring to encourage staff to connect with colleagues beyond their department and to provide staff with a venue to get questions answered by Juan Franco, vice chancellor for student affairs.

Our Nebraska celebrates inclusion

Our Nebraska, a series of events held March 6-10, gave students from all backgrounds the opportunity to discuss what it means to be diverse and how to create an inclusive campus and community.

Previously known as the Empowerment Forum, Our Nebraska offered events throughout an entire week rather than in a concentrated day-long seminar. Activities were sponsored by Student Affairs and the Office of Academic Support and Intercultural Services (OASIS) with co-sponsorship from the Diversity Council.

Goodin named director of Services for Students with Disabilities

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has named George “Sam” Goodin as director of Services for Students with Disabilities. Goodin, director of Disability Support Services at Southern Illinois University, will start his new role April 3.

Tyler Riewer of charity:water kicks off Big Red Talks

On Tuesday, March 28, Tyler Riewer, Brand Content Lead at charity:water, spoke to Nebraska students and campus community members about the influence that activities outside classroom played in his professional experiences.

A 2004 graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Riewer worked in the advertising field for eight years. While working in Portland, charity:water, a nonprofit dedicated to providing clean water to people in need, reached out to ask him to join their team.

Student achievements applauded at Student Impact Awards

On Thursday, April 6, Student Involvement honored outstanding contributions and efforts by Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs), RSO leaders and advisors at the Student Impact Awards.

$1.9 Million in Grants and Sponsorships Fund Student Affairs Programs

Six departments and more than 16 programs in the Division of Student Affairs benefitted from $1,914,646 in grant and sponsorship funds during the 2016 calendar year.

"We are excited to report how successful some of our departments have been in their efforts to gain financial assistance. Most of these funds go directly to help our students,” said Vice Chancellor Juan N. Franco.

Campbell Honored with New Student Affairs Advocate Award

On Sept. 30, the Student Affairs Staff Council hosted the annual Fall Celebration for the Division of Student Affairs. More than 150 employees and graduate students attended the event which included introductions of new employees, introductions of Staff Council members and an update from Dr. Franco on the state of the division. This year’s event also included a performance by Boots & Cats, an all-female a cappella student group, and the presentation of a new Student Affairs Student Advocate Award.
