A Pioneering Native American Woman Inspires 21st Century Students

When junior Angelica Solomon arrived to listen to speaker Joe Starita at the Native American Symposium, she thought she’d be getting lunch and maybe listen to something interesting—she had no idea that she’d hear about her great-grandmother’s plight in becoming the first female Native American doctor.

Students share their hopes for the future at the Night of Listening

On Tuesday, Feb. 21, students shared their visions for the future with local representatives at Night of Listening, an event sponsored by the Center for Civic Engagement, ASUN, the Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services and the College of Arts and Sciences. City Councilpersons Leirion Gaylor-Baird, Carl Eskridge and Jane Raybould were in attendance along with State Sens. John Lowe, Adam Morfeld and Anna Wishart. Sen. Ben Sasse’s outreach coordinator Ryan Broker spoke on his behalf.

Never Forget to Smile, Nebraska

My name is Mohammed Hussain Al Abdullah and I was born in Saudi Arabia where I lived for the first ten years of my life. At the age of ten, due to my career in cycling, I moved with my Road Cycling Club to the Czech Republic where I lived for nearly four years without my family. From there, I lived for a year in Manchester City, in the United Kingdom, before leaving for Dubai. While living in Dubai, I learned about myself, discovered my passions, and figured out what I wanted to do in my life.

Pi Alpha Chi Joins Nebraska Panhellenic Association as Associate Member

Pi Alpha Chi, a local sorority founded on Catholic values, was accepted into the Panhellenic Association at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as an associate member in September.

Nebraska Define American RSO Wins National Award

The Define American Chapter at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln received the College Chapter of the Year award from the national organization in December.

Nebraska continues to add to nation-leading Wasson Award winners

Four University of Nebraska-Lincoln students received the William N. Wasson Student Leadership and Academic Award presented by NIRSA, the national association for campus recreation leadership, during the association’s annual conference held February 21–24, 2017 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. Nebraska leads the nation with 78 recipients since the award’s inception in 1993 and is the only higher-ed institution in the country to have at least one Wasson Award winner every year the award has been given.

UNL Community Dishes on Building Community & Creating Action

Approximately 50 students, staff and faculty gathered Friday, July 15 at noon to discuss the epidemic of recent tragedies across the country. Kevin Reese, program coordinator in the Office for Academic Success and Intercultural Services, began the event by promoting open conversation without arguments, respectful conversation and engaging with one another. An officer with the Lincoln Police Department was also present.

Book Club Invites Discussion on Japanese Literature and Culture

When senior global studies major Milla Heikkinen talks about the Kawasaki Reading Room Book Club, the enthusiasm and passion in her voice proves that the club is more special than your average reading group.

The Kawasaki Reading Room Book Club provides a place for students and members of the community to be in fellowship with people who share an interest Japanese culture.

MLK Week encourages reflection and rallying

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln recently celebrated Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and reflected upon the role of his dream in America today. Multiple events in January called upon the university community to perpetuate social justice through education and meaningful conversations.

Greek leadership symposia encourage education and reflection

On Friday, Feb. 24, the second Greek leadership symposium of the semester took place with more than 142 students present. At the symposium Nolan Conradt, the education and training officer for the University Police Department, presented on emergency plans and situational preparedness.

“It is good to be mindful of what actions to take in the case of emergencies or crises and to be more aware of our surroundings,” said Shayne Arriola, a member of Pi Kappa Alpha and president of the Interfraternity Council.

Student Spotlight: "What If I Don't Like Seafood?"

“The world is your oyster, now go find your pearl.” I would hear this cliché phrase from my English teacher at least once a week and to be frank, I didn’t understand the big deal that everyone was making. I was expecting college to be four years of my life in which I’ll meet people from all over the world and experience lots of new things, but I figured it would just be like a bigger version of high school with harder courses and added responsibilities. Boy was I wrong, because the second I stepped onto UNL, the world did become my oyster.

Students Learn About Immigration & Volunteer in Nebraska Communities Over Fall Break

While many were spending fall break at home, relaxing or on vacation, four students joined the Center for Civic Engagement’s Fall Break Service-Study ASB.

“An ASB is an opportunity for students to travel with their peers at a relatively low cost, learn about a community, delve into the culture and history of a community, and then serve that community,” said graduate student Grace Brown, who both planned and attended the ASB.

Lunar New Year Celebrated with Games, Activities

The Lunar New Year was celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 26 with games, food and entertainment. 

Alex Tran, president of the Vietnamese Student Association, explained the background of the Lunar New Year.

“Lunar New Year is the traditional New Year of the Southeast Asian countries. Each year has different animals, and this year is the year of the rooster,” said Tran. “It’s a time family comes together and hands out lucky money, and you play a lot of games. Usually, we take the whole week off for celebrating.”

Dinner in a Nebraska Home connects international students with university employees

Fifty-seven University of Nebraska-Lincoln faculty and staff members invited 117 international students into their homes as a part of a program called Dinner in a Nebraska Home. The program, sponsored by Student Engagement, strives to introduce international students to an aspect of daily life in Nebraska by connecting the students with university employees.

Women's Week Informs, Empowers and Inspires Action

More than 400 students, staff, faculty and community members participated in Women’s Week events. Hosted March 5 -18, 2016, the event included movie screenings, panel discussions, art exhibits, keynote lectures, athletic events and technology centered event – all centered around the mission of empowering women.

$1.9 Million in Grants and Sponsorships Fund Student Affairs Programs

Six departments and more than 16 programs in the Division of Student Affairs benefitted from $1,914,646 in grant and sponsorship funds during the 2016 calendar year.

"We are excited to report how successful some of our departments have been in their efforts to gain financial assistance. Most of these funds go directly to help our students,” said Vice Chancellor Juan N. Franco.

Behind the Success of the Night of the Living Drag Show

All seats were filled five minutes before the start Night of the Living Drag Show on Friday, Oct. 28. When the show started, so many people had flooded the Centennial Room in the Nebraska Union that the emcee had to remind attendees to move away from the door because blocking the exit was a fire hazard.

46 Greek leaders participate in suicide prevention training

As most students returned to campus on Sunday, Jan. 8, leaders of the fraternity and sorority community at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln tackled a tough topic—suicide. Presidents from 46 organizations attended QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Program training led by Nebraska Youth Suicide Prevention Project Region V, a grant-funded project focused on bystander intervention.

Presenters reviewed the three steps of Question, Persuade and Refer (QPR) to help save lives, emphasizing that you can make a difference.

Huskers Unplugged facilitates connections and conversations

On Friday, Mar. 3, UNL Hillel partnered with the Muslim Student Association and the UNL Ballroom Dance Club to host Huskers Unplugged. Students strengthened friendships and made connections at the technology-free event.

The evening of activities kicked off with sunset yoga on the Nebraska Union green space. After yoga, students gathered in the Centennial Room for bingo, coloring and conversation. Students enjoyed soda, popcorn and Israeli chocolate balls for snacks.
