Speaker invites humor while discussing disabilities
Student affairs professionals are invited to participate in the fall 2017 professional development workshop, focusing on bridging the gap between discomfort and humor in disabilities.
On Friday, Oct. 20, Richard Harris, the retired director of student disability services at Ball State University, will present “Disability Humor: The Bridge Over the Discomfort Gap.” Harris was a co-founder of the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) and twice served as its president.

Pat Tetreault, director of the LGBTQA Resource Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus at the Kansas State University Lavender Graduation in May.

Pat McBride honored with Kansas Monk Award
Pat McBride, associate dean of enrollment management and director of New Student Enrollment, received the Kansas Monk Award during Benedictine College’s reunion weekend on June 17. The award honors graduates who have distinguished themselves in a professional field, shown a prominence of service to the civic community, demonstrated outstanding loyalty to the alma mater and reflected honor on the college through family and social life.

LGBTQA+ Resource Center accepts ACPA award
The LGBTQA+ Resource Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln recently accepted the Commitment to Social Justice Education award from the ACPA, an international organization for college student educators.
Selected by the ACPA Commission for Social Justice Educators, this award honors a department, campus, ACPA committee or commission that demonstrates a commitment to social justice education and development, training or programming.
Nebraska faculty member Stephanie Bondi nominated the LGBTQA+ Resource Center for this honor.

Housing office named to honor Doug Zatechka
Friends and colleagues of Doug Zatechka celebrated his many contributions to the university at a reception to name the Douglas S. Zatechka University Housing Office in the newly constructed Willa S. Cather Dining Complex. Zatechka served as director of University Housing for 34 years, retiring in 2010.
Story after story filled the air as colleagues munched on candied bacon, chocolate frosted donuts and chicken wings – a handful of Zatechka’s infamously favorite fares.

Deeds awarded for exemplary service to students
In appreciation of Jan Deed’s years of extraordinary and sustained service to students, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln honored her with the James V. Griesen Exemplary Service to Students Award on April 23 during the annual All-University Honors Convocation at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.

43 students honored for character and civic engagement
A combined ceremony on Thursday, April 19, recognized positive achievements for students named to ‘Franco’s List’ and those who earned certificates and service awards through the Center for Civic Engagement. At the event the Character Council debuted two new distinctions, the Sam Foltz Award and the Franco Fund Scholarship.
