Tuesday, September 26, 2017 Speaker invites humor while discussing disabilities

Richard Harris will present "Disability Humor: The Bridge Over the Discomfort Gap" on Friday, Oct. 20, 2017 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Student affairs professionals are invited to participate in the fall 2017 professional development workshop, focusing on bridging the gap between discomfort and humor in disabilities.

On Friday, Oct. 20, Richard Harris, the retired director of student disability services at Ball State University, will present “Disability Humor: The Bridge Over the Discomfort Gap.” Harris was a co-founder of the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) and twice served as its president.

In his presentation, Harris addresses the uneasiness some people may experience when encountering somebody with a noticeable disability. A range of oral humor and cartoons will be used to explain how to work through discomfort and build effective interpersonal relationships. Participants will gain strategies to work with all student populations and enjoy networking with colleagues.

The presentation will begin at 9 a.m. in the Willa Cather Complex, Red Cloud A. Light refreshments provided.
