Jan Deeds, 2017 recipient of the James V. Griesen Exemplary Service to Students Award

In appreciation of Jan Deed’s years of extraordinary and sustained service to students, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln honored her with the James V. Griesen Exemplary Service to Students Award on April 23 during the annual All-University Honors Convocation at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.

As a long-time advocate for women, men, the LGBTQA community, mental health, social justice, and relationship violence education and awareness, Deeds is an enthusiastic problem solver and loyal confidant. She is a popular addition to campus committees and task forces for her wisdom and ability to relate with others.

“What a gift to be recognized for doing the work that I love,” said Deeds. “Dr. Griesen was a role model for me in my early student affairs career, so that makes the award especially meaningful.”

In her current roles as Director of the Women’s Center and Associate Director of Student Involvement and an advisor to seven student organizations, Deeds empowers students by helping them develop skills to take on the world.

“To understand just how beloved Jan is, one need only listen,” said Rose Holz, the associate director of Women’s and Gender Studies and one of Deeds’ nominators.

Holz goes on to say she’s heard a student from Deeds’ masculinities class say, “The doors to my heart have been opened in regards to having compassion for men. And as a radical feminist, that’s saying a lot.”
