The UNL community showed appreciation for Linda Schwartzkopf’s years of exemplary service when she was honored with the James V. Griesen Exemplary Service to Students Award April 24 during the annual All-University Honors Convocation at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.

For more than 32 years Linda Schwartzkopf has dedicated her time, energy, positive attitude, open mind and gentle wisdom to UNL students. A UNL graduate herself, Schwartzkopf’s roots run deep with Husker pride.

In her current role as the Director of the Office of Greek Affairs and in past roles including Director of Judicial Affairs, peers commend her for managing stress with grace and civility no matter the difficulty of the situation. It is with compassion and understanding that she creates “teachable moments” for students.

In addition to overseeing the 46 fraternities and sororities at UNL, Schwartzkopf has served on the Lincoln College Partnership Task Force, the High Risk Behaviors Task Force, the International/American Interaction Task Force; and is a frequently requested speaker for professional development programs, campus diversity training seminars, Greek Week keynotes, and fraternity and sorority chapter events. She also has served as the advisor to the Black Masque Chapter of Mortar Board since 1985.

Students and alumni alike boast with praise of Schwartzkopf’s mentorship. A past student said, “There were multiple times when I felt that the world was going astray and it was Linda that I turned to for help in fixing my problems.” This statement is not unique when looking at Schwartzkopf’s nomination packet as she has helped countless students determine their academic path. Her nomination letters echo a consistent theme – she is someone who students aspire to be like (the ultimate compliment).

The Griesen Award annually recognizes one individual who has gone beyond the performance or their assigned work, devoting extra time and effort in serving the needs of students—very accurately describing Schwartzkopf’s contributions.

"It is such an honor to have been selected as the recipient of the James V. Griesen Award," said Schwartzkopf. "I had the privelege of working with Dr. Griesen for many years and know first-hand his commitment and dedication to helping students. It is fitting that an award that recognizes all that goes on each day beyond the classroom bears his name. This award is an affirmation for myself and many colleagues who do what we do everyday — help our students maximize their potential through their college experience."
