Withdrawal Policies
Delayed Notification of Withdrawal
It is recognized that there are a few situations in which the circumstances surrounding a student's withdrawal from the university may delay the student's notification of university officials that he/she wishes to withdraw from all of his/her classes. Such circumstances might include the student's unexpected hospitalization or the death of a member of the student's immediate family who is living in the same household as the student. In these instances, a student may be withdrawn from all of his/her classes for the term if a timely request and proper documentation are submitted to the Director of Registration, Room 59 Canfield Administration Building. The effective date of the withdrawal would then be the date of hospitalization or the date of the family member's death, and tuition and fees would be charged according to the schedule shown on the previous page.
The only other situation in which the effective date of the withdrawal from classes may be different from the date the Application for Withdrawal Form is filed is one in which it is shown that a university official has made a mistake that has caused the student additional expense. If a student feels that this is the case, the student must submit documentation supporting his/her claim that an error was made to the Director of Registration, Room 59 Canfield Administration Building. The effective date of the student's withdrawal in this situation would be determined by the appropriate university official.
Under no circumstances are exceptions made to the withdrawal and tuition refund policies.
Withdrawal From One Or More Courses At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Philosophy
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is a public institution which is accountable to the citizens of the State of Nebraska. As such, the University has established policies and procedures which govern the operations of the institution and provide guidelines for the actions of university officials. Such policies and procedures are necessary to ensure that all students are treated in a manner that is consistent with the expectations of the citizens of Nebraska and that every student is treated in an equitable manner. Only by carefully adhering to these policies is the University certain that each situation is handled fairly.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's policy on withdrawing from all courses for which a student is registered in a given term is predicated on the belief that: a) all students must be treated equally, and b) each student should be held responsible for the costs associated with his/her registration for courses and the expense to the university in planning to meet the student's course enrollment demands. When an individual registers for a course at UNL, a space is reserved in a particular section of the course. For each course section offered, an instructor is assigned, classroom facilities are reserved, materials and supplies are ordered, course rosters are printed, etc. The number of course sections offered is adjusted to the degree possible to meet aggregate student demand. Thus, even if a student never attends a course, a great deal of the actual "cost" of the course has already been expended or is encumbered prior to the beginning of the term. An academic department cannot, for example, pay the instructor less because one or more students decides to drop the course, and any withdrawal beyond the first week of the semester creates a class vacancy that will not be filled.
UNL withdrawal and tuition refund policies and procedures are published in the Schedule of Classes each term. It is expected that students will understand that their registration for courses serves as a contract with the university. Never attending or ceasing to attend classes -- without withdrawing via transaction code 9 on the NRoll system or by submission of the appropriate withdrawal form to the Registration Office, 17A Canfield Administration Building -- does not constitute a withdrawal from UNL.
The Withdrawal Process
Withdrawal from UNL (Disenrollment)
If you wish to withdraw from all courses for which you are registered during the current term, you must either drop all classes using transaction code 9 on the NRoll system, or write or call the Registration Office, Service Counter 107 Canfield Administration Building, Lincoln, NE 68588-0416 (phone 402-472-3635, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. CST) by the end of the 12th week of the semester. Any withdrawals after the 12th week of the semester must be for extraordinary circumstances and will be granted only by petition through the student's college dean's office. A "withdrawal" means that you are no longer enrolled for courses for the term at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Withdrawal from Individual Courses (Drops)
If you wish to withdraw from one or more courses while remaining enrolled in other courses at UNL, you must follow the Drop and Add process described in detail in the Schedule of Classes. Tuition and fees will be assessed according to the schedule below.
Tuition and Fee Assessment Schedule
The effective date of your withdrawal (or drop), which determines your tuition and grade liabilities, is the date the Application for Withdrawal Form (or Drop and Add Form) is filed with the Registration Office, or the date on which you complete a telephone drop or withdrawal transaction on NRoll. (Consult the appropriate Schedule of Classes for detailed information on grade liabilities.) When you drop a class or withdraw from all classes for the fall or spring semester, you will be charged for tuition and fees according to the following schedule:
NOTE: Courses that meet for less than a semester (i.e., mini-courses, summer sessions, etc.) follow a special prorated schedule for the charges. Contact the Office of Student Accounts, 124 Canfield Administration Building, or the Office of Registration, 107 Canfield Administration Building, for details on charges in those situations.
