Franco's List

On Friday, Nov. 18, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Juan N. Franco and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Character Council awarded 30 students with the Franco’s List distinction. Staff, faculty, and friends and family of the recipients were in attendance as guest speaker Dr. Ann Koopman opened the ceremony with inspirational quotations. Koopman thanked the students for making a positive impact on campus and in the community.

“My favorite part about Franco's List is reading all of the wonderful nominations about the fantastic things that people of integrity are doing at UNL,” said Character Council President Jerica Burgess.

The Fall 2016 Franco’s List recipients are Syria Amin, Laura Barrow, Camden Bilyeu, Stephanie Blair, Elizabeth Boschult, Carly Burkhardt, Alexa Burmeister, Jazmin Castillo, Dalton Dey, Levi Gipson, Derrick Gulley, Colton Harper, Jake Headid, Sam Jensen, Kelsey Koski, YooJeong Lee, Spencer Lindsay, Morgan Mallory, Joy McCrown, Emily Murphy, Sara Oleson, Juana Paramo, Abi Paudel, Dominik Redden, Sydney Rhoades, Bailey Schulz, Laura Springer, Lauren Stohlman, Nicole Tank and Carolyn Willis.

To nominate a student of integrity for the award, staff, faculty and fellow students completed online nomination forms earlier in the semester. Then the Character Council then reviewed the nominations and selected recipients who most emulated the Council’s six building blocks of integrity: respect, open-mindedness, commitment, caring, dependability and citizenship. The Character Council received 74 nominations this semester.

Give Back. Big.

At the same event, the Center for Civic Engagement announced the winners for the Give Back. Big. awards, which provide two $1,000 grants to help students change the world around them. One grant is selected by a community vote and the other is selected by a committee of staff, faculty and students.

The Give Back. Big. recipients for the fall are Colton Harper and Jared Vanlandingham. Harper will use the funds to start a robotics program for middle school students in Title I Lincoln Public Schools. Vanlandingham will fund children who have parents or family members battling cancer with the opportunity to spend a week at the Camp Kesem summer camp.
